How We Verify Every Plastic Surgeon

When you’re considering plastic surgery abroad, the surgeon is everything. Most medical tourism companies make it hard to know who will operate on you, and whether that person is truly qualified. This is exactly what we check before a surgeon joins our network, and what we never do.

The five checks

  1. 1

    Registration and certification

We confirm the surgeon’s record in ReTHUS, Colombia’s public registry of health professionals, which you can also check yourself. We also verify active membership of the Colombian Society of Plastic, Aesthetic and Reconstructive Surgery (SCCP) directly with the society, never from the surgeon’s own word. Membership requires an accredited surgical residency and board exams. We look at international certifications and training abroad where they apply.

  2. 2

    Surgical volume and specialty focus

A certified surgeon who performs a procedure a handful of times a year is a different proposition than one who performs it regularly. We look at how many of each procedure a surgeon performs, whether they concentrate their practice, and their years of experience with specific techniques. We match you by that specificity.

  3. 3

    Peer review and reputation

Reputation can’t be faked among colleagues. Through our network of medical contacts in Medellín we ask how a surgeon is regarded by other specialists, hospital staff and anesthesiologists, including how they handle complications. A surgeon without a strong peer reputation doesn’t join, whatever their credentials.

  4. 4

    Facility accreditation

The operating facility matters as much as the surgeon. We work with clinics and hospitals accredited by Icontec or an internationally recognized equivalent, with appropriate intensive-care backup, modern anesthesia equipment, sterile protocols and round-the-clock nursing. We don’t allow procedures in unaccredited private suites or facilities that can’t provide emergency support.

  5. 5

    Ongoing patient feedback

Once a surgeon is in our network, we keep checking. Each patient is followed through recovery and asked for candid feedback on communication, informed consent, how complications were handled, and whether they felt respected. Surgeons with consistently negative feedback are reviewed and, if necessary, removed.

What we don’t do

Transparency works in both directions. This is what you won’t find in our process.

  • We don’t take referral fees

Surgeons don’t pay to be in our network, and their presence doesn’t financially benefit us.

  • We don’t recommend by price or availability

Our recommendations are based on the fit for your procedure and your goals.

  • We don’t hide a surgeon’s history

If we are aware of a known pattern, we address it directly, not euphemistically.

  • We never touch the clinical fees

You pay your surgeon and clinic directly, which removes any incentive to steer you to someone who isn’t the right fit.

What you see for each surgeon

Every surgeon appears in our directory with the results of these checks, so you can see what was confirmed. Patients who use our concierge service receive the surgeon’s full profile, including what you need to verify them yourself.

Our team then guides you to the surgeon who fits your procedure, rather than leaving you to choose from a list.

FAQ

Surgeon verification: your questions

How do you verify a surgeon’s credentials?

We check their record in ReTHUS, Colombia’s public registry of health professionals, and confirm their active membership of the Colombian Society of Plastic, Aesthetic and Reconstructive Surgery (SCCP) directly with the society.

Can I check a surgeon myself?

Yes. ReTHUS is a public registry. Patients who use our concierge service receive each surgeon’s details, including the information needed to verify them yourself.

Do surgeons pay to be in your network?

No. We don’t accept referral fees from surgeons, and we don’t recommend surgeons based on price or availability.

What happens if a surgeon stops meeting your standard?

Surgeons who generate consistently negative patient feedback are reviewed and, if necessary, removed from our network.

Why can’t I see the surgeons’ names on the website?

Full profiles are shared with patients who use our concierge service, so that our team can guide you to the right surgeon for your procedure rather than leave you to choose from a list on your own.
